Funding For After-School Programs is Restored in 5 Local Schools

Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) will be able to offer 21st Century after-school programs at five ACPS schools. This comes after federal funding for after-school programs was restored. The programs will be available starting on January 19.

“The district was informed before the school year began that 21st Century Community Learning Center grants would no longer be available for after-school programs at Metcalfe, Lake Forest, Idylwild, Alachua and Irby elementary schools,” according to an ACPS press release. “The 21st Century program had been in place for all five schools since 2015. However, funding for those schools has now been renewed.”

The 21st Century grant provides funds for important school services, including funding for after-school programs, tutoring, homework help and other enrichment opportunities. These restored after-school programs will be available Mondays through Thursdays from dismissal to 5:45, and snacks and dinners are provided.

“This is very good news,” said Everett Caudle, the Director of Grants, Acquisitions and Special Projects for ACPS in the press release. “It means that another 238 students in our district will now have access to quality after-school programming.”
