Some believe April Fools’ Day may have originated in 1582, when France switched calendars. This calendar switch changed the start of the new year from April 1 to January 1. Those who did not recognize this change, either by accident or by choice, were joked about and pranked, being called “April fools.” Today, people celebrate April Fools’ Day by playing pranks on one another. This can often be fun but can sometimes get out of hand. If you are looking for fun and harmless family April Fools’ Day pranks that you can play on your children, keep reading!
Strange Breakfast
Wake your children up by telling them you have made them a big breakfast. They will be excited to see all their favorite breakfast foods on the table. But when they get there, serve them vegetables instead. When they are confused, pretend that it’s normal for a few minutes, and then bring out the real breakfast!
Burry Them in Fun
After they fall asleep, sneak into your child’s room and cover them in stuffed animals, balloons, cardboard building blocks, packing peanuts or anything else you can think of that would make them laugh when they wake up.
Get Ready Switch Up
This works best if you have multiple children, but it can still work with one child as well. Take your children’s clothes out of their closets and switch them. You can also do this with their drawers or with your own clothes if you only have one child. When they can’t find their clothes, they’ll realize they’ve been pranked!
Brown E’s
When your children get home from school, tell them that you have baked them a batch of brownies and that you are keeping them warm in the oven. When you pull them out, they’ll be sad to find that you have cut out the letter “E” a bunch of times on brown paper. Maybe actually make a real batch of brownies so they aren’t too disappointed.
Jello “Juice”
Another family April Fools’ Day prank is to make Jello and place it in drinking glasses with straws in them. Then, put them in the fridge to become solid overnight. When your kids wake up, ask them if they’d like a cup of juice. When they try to take a sip, they won’t be able to and will have a good laugh before being even happier to dig into their Jello first thing in the morning.
Sabotage Their Seat
Place a whoopee cushion under a chair cushion that your child sits on regularly and wait for the fun to begin. When they hear the sound that the cushion makes after they sit down, they won’t be able to contain their laughter!
