Governor Ron DeSantis held a press conference on April 29 outlining Florida’s approach for reopening the state on May 4.

DeSantis explained that the state will be following a “Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step” plan in regards to reopening the state of Florida. Phase One of the plan will allow restaurants to reopen outdoor seating and open at 25% capacity for indoor restaurants and retail stores. Elective surgeries can also resume. Schools will continue distanced learning, and rules for bars, gyms and personal services remain the same.

Phase One will go into affect on May 4, 2020.

At risk individuals should continue to avoid contact with people outside of the home. The CDC guidelines of physical distancing should remain, and it is still recommended to wear face masks in public and in face-to-face situations.

The state of Florida met all State Gating Criteria that were necessary for the state to start the re-opening process. Some of the criteria include a decrease in influenza like illness visits, a declining positivity rate trend and a declining trend of overall cases.
