Why Should You Use Sunscreen to Protect You From the Sun’s UV Rays?

Days at the beach are a summer staple, but making sure the whole family isn’t red and sunburnt the next day is also a priority. Sunscreen is the best way to ensure protection against the sun’s UV rays, and should be applied every day not just on beach days.

According to the American Cancer Society, sun exposure adds up day after day and those with constant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays are at greater risk for skin cancer. So, to make this summer an enjoyable one playing in the sun and not worrying about it, here are a few ways beyond just sunscreen to protect your skin.

Though maybe an obvious precaution, staying out of direct sunlight will help defend against the sun. Using umbrellas or sitting under shaded areas while at the beach will reduce your risk of getting burnt while still enjoying the sun.

If you want to let little ones run around in the sun, or if you want to exercise outside, consider UV-protective clothing like T-shirts, leggings and bathing suit coverups. Hats are also another way to protect your face and head from UV rays. “A hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is ideal because it protects areas that are often exposed to intense sun, such as the ears, eyes, forehead, nose, and scalp,” according to the American Cancer Society.

The rest of your body might be covered, but we can’t forget about the face. Using a lip balm that has SPF in it will work to keep the sensitive skin on your lips from getting burnt. Just wearing a lipstick or lip gloss won’t protect your lips from the sun and might even cause them to get burnt faster if the product has a shine to it.

Now next time when packing up for a day on the sand, you know some of the protective gear you can use today for an easier tomorrow!
